Def Leppard – Hysteria Tour – 1987

September 15th 1987 – De Montfort Hall

It was just over a year since we saw Def Leppard make their UK comeback at Monsters of Rock. Now, surprisingly, they were coming to lil old Leicester!

We had been having problems as a city attracting bands to play here. They tended to go to Nottingham and Birmingham, so it was great to have a band back in town….and at our premier venue.

I’ve included the Leicester Mercury review and as was often the case with their reviews, you wondered if they had ever left the bar or had any interest in the type of music they were watching! I mean, this nasty rock stuff can be a bit loud for these hacks. 😉

Def Leppard also never quite seemed to get the press onside, which was strange, but the fans loved them!

Hysteria had just come out and was already a ballad rock classic album, with great sing along songs, like Hysteria, Animal and Pour Some Sugar On Me. Mixed with a great track listing from “On Through The Night” and “Pyromania”, Def Leppard were finally getting the UK recognition they deserved….from the fans at least!

“Rock of Ages” was brilliant and Joe Elliot has a great rock presence. I’ve even found a YouTube clip of it from the night! It comes with a quality warning, it was 1987 remember 🙂

I think the support band were Tesla, but I have to confess, I was mainly at the bar, having stuck my head rounds and found them a bit to plain for me….nice beer though.
