Onetwo – Castle Park Festival – 2006

August 28th 2006 – Leicester Cathedral

OMD unexpectedly reformed in 2006, but Paul Humphreys was also in collaboration with Claudia Brucken in a side project called Onetwo.

It was exciting to see the two of them turning up at Leicester Cathedral as part of the Castle Park Festival.

Sadly, no ticket remains for this event. I think this was a one-off arts and music festival? although it maybe ran a few year? Any which way, you didn’t get many concerts that I would enjoy being hosted in Leicester Cathedral, so this was a really exciting ticket to get.

It also meant I ran into a few people from the past who I had lost contact with (still have really). Mick was someone I’d been to a number of Ultravox concerts with in our heyday, so really nice to catch up for a brief chat and put the world to rights!

I don’t think I had ever been into the cathedral before, it was a really moving experience. The music that Paul and Claudia did was a mixture of their own songs as Onetwo (they had just released the album “Instead”) , some of Paul’s OMD work and of course, Claudia’s work as Propaganda. The synth and atmospheric musical styles of all the music really fitted well in the environment.

The first few songs were soft and easy melodic listening and then “Sequential” really shows off Claudia’s vocal talent.

Then “Messages” by OMD. I could only find one clip of anything from this concert on Youtube and it was this but it was so drowned out by the excited filmer, you can go find that yourselves 😉

It was always in the back of my mind, if they would play Propaganda’s “Dr Mabuse”….they did…..cracking lyrics for a Cathedral! The vicar seemed genuinely ok with it though?

Dr Mabuse – Propaganda

A very interesting German track, Kein Anschluss, which was a very techno, industrial sound. This was a bit more like Propaganda, but was intruiging.

Classic tracks followed, like “Souvenir”, the ever brilliant “Duel “and “p-Machinery” and the crowd was ecstatic…not sure the cathedral gets this on a normal choir outing.

There was even a track by the band Act that Claudia as in for a while….can’t say I remembered them at all, but they came off the ZTT record label.

Really enjoyable experience and to see music in such an important building in my home town was well worth the night out.
